What Role Does Elastics Play In Orthodontics?

Many people who have braces will only deal with brackets, archwires, and ligatures in their mouth. But, for 90 percent of orthodontic cases, another important feature will be added – rubber bands.

The Purpose Of Elastics
Elastics, or rubber bands, are used in the bite-fixing phase of orthodontic treatment (the longest and most difficult part of the whole process). Not every patient requires this step, but if you’re suffering from jaw misalignment (i.e. overbite or underbite), rubber bands/elastics can help.

The Do’s And Don’ts
DO – Get in the habit of carrying extra elastics at all times. If one should break, you will be able to replace it as soon as possible. By consistently wearing elastics, you can shorten the overall time needed to wear braces.

DON’T – Double up on elastics. This will create too much pressure on your teeth and can cause harm to your teeth’s roots.

DO – Wash your hands before removing or replacing rubber bands (your elastics should only be removed when you’re eating or brushing your teeth).

DON’T – Stretch out the elastic – it will loose its strength and become ineffective. TIP: When you need to remove or replace them, put the rubber band around your finger.

DO – Wear your elastics twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week (unless told otherwise).

I visited Speaks Orthodontics to straighten my teeth before my upcoming wedding. I was originally quoted 18 months for treatment, I finished in just 12. The practice is clean, the techs are professional and kind, and Dr. Speaks is very talented. I appreciate that he is direct but remains supportive and encouraging. Highly recommend this practice!
Response from the owner:Thank you, Lauren! We're thrilled to hear about your positive experience and the results achieved ahead of your wedding. Our team strives to provide excellent care, and your recommendation means so much to us!

I went in for a free consultation for jaw pain. Dr. Speaks was incredibly thorough and spent time patiently explaining what he was seeing and teaching me how to treat it. Turns out I do not need orthodontia! The front desk staff were very nice and Dalia, who is the treatment coordinator, was also very kind. 10/10 from me!

Oh, and my grandson is being treated by Dr. Speaks and he and his parents are very happy so far.
Response from the owner:Thank you for your wonderful feedback, Leila! We’re thrilled to hear about your positive experience with Dr. Speaks and our team. It's great to know your grandson is also receiving excellent care. We appreciate your trust in us!

How do elastics work in orthodontic treatment?

Elastics play a crucial role in orthodontic treatment by helping to correct bite issues and jaw misalignments. By wearing rubber bands as instructed by your orthodontist, you can gradually shift your teeth and jaw into the proper position. This phase of treatment is essential for achieving a healthy and functional bite, as well as a straight and beautiful smile.

It's important to follow your orthodontist's guidelines for wearing elastics, including the proper placement and duration of wear. By being diligent with your elastic usage, you can help speed up the treatment process and achieve optimal results in a shorter amount of time.

Tips for effectively using elastics in your orthodontic treatment

Carrying extra elastics with you at all times can help ensure that you never go without them, even when you're on the go. Remember to wash your hands before removing or replacing rubber bands to maintain good oral hygiene during treatment. Additionally, wearing your elastics consistently, twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, will help maximize their effectiveness and speed up your treatment progress.

If you have any questions or concerns about using elastics in your orthodontic treatment, don't hesitate to reach out to your orthodontist for guidance. They can provide you with personalized advice and support to ensure that you get the most out of your treatment and achieve the smile of your dreams.
