Here’s how you can prepare your child to welcome their new corrective-wear with ease.
Talk About the Treatment
While you understand that braces will help improve the appearance and function of your child’s smile, they may not. They’ll likely see the treatment as a bunch of metal being installed into their mouths, which can be a bit scary. Sit them down and explain to them what will be happening so they’re fully aware.
Calm Their Fears
One of the biggest fears your child may have about getting braces is that it will hurt. Assure them that, although there may be some slight discomfort at first as the teeth begin shifting, braces don’t cause pain, so there is nothing to be afraid of.
Stock Up on Wax
Orthodontic wax can be a lifesaver when it comes to discomfort from braces. If there is a spot where a bracket or wire is irritating your child, all you’ll have to do is ball up some wax and place it on the problem area to stop the pain.
Phase Out Chewy Foods
The only main downside to your child having braces is that they’ll have to cut back on eating chewy and sticky foods that could get stuck to their brackets or wires. Rather than try to cut out all those foods at one time, gradually phase them out so your child won’t miss them too much. And remember, it’s ok to indulge in a sweet treat here and there — just be careful.
