Don’t Panic!
It’s not uncommon to experience a broken wire or a loose bracket when you have traditional braces, so there’s nothing to panic about. The first thing you should do is schedule an appointment with your orthodontist to get your broken braces fixed.
Orthodontic malfunctions can be uncomfortable, and can even cause cuts on the inside of your mouth if left unattended to. You may need to do some temporary maintenance yourself while you wait for your next appointment.
Floating Bracket
When you have traditional braces, the brackets are bonded to your teeth with special orthodontic glue. Brackets can detach or ‘float’ away from the tooth for many reasons including:
-
Impact to the face or mouth.
-
Eating foods that are too hard or crunchy.
-
The glue weakened and simply did not hold well.
Fortunately, a floating bracket rarely causes any pain or damage, however, it can rub against the inside of your lip. If you have a broken bracket here are some things you can do:
-
If your bracket has completely detached from your tooth and the wire, it can be a choking hazard. Take it out of your mouth immediately.
-
If your bracket is still attached to the wire, wrap the floating piece in dental wax to prevent any rubbing or irritation.
Broken Wire
If you’re experiencing a broken wire, the sharp wire can cause damage to your cheeks and gums. To make the exposed wire safe while you wait for your next appointment, you can try the following:
-
Clip the sharp end with nail clippers or a small set of fliers. If there is a risk that you may swallow the clipped piece of wire, place a tissue in the mouth while you clip the end.
-
If you’re uncomfortable with clipping the wire, cover the sharp end with dental wax to prevent any scrapes or cuts.
Bent Wire
Wires can bend out of shape when you eat foods that are too hard for your braces to handle. When the wires of your braces bend, they are no longer directing your teeth in the desired direction. While bent wires don’t usually cause discomfort, they can alter your treatment. It is best to schedule an appointment with your orthodontist as soon as possible.
