How To Avoid Bad Breath With Braces

Ever have a conversation with somebody where you feel yourself backing away because their breath is less than pleasant? We all know the feeling and we know how offensive it can be to speak to somebody with bad breath. Now think, you’ve probably been on the other end of that scenario more times than you might have realized, especially if you wear braces. So, how can you avoid bad breath even with a mouth full of metal? See below for some tips from the experts:

What Causes Bad Breath?

There is no one main culprit for what we know to be “bad breath.” There a lots of factors that contribute to unpleasant smells that stem from the oral cavity — what you eat and drink have a lot to do with it, but there are plenty of other contributors as well.

With that said, bacteria in the mouth tends to result in bad breath, but there are lots of things you can do to fight back.

Bad Breath and Braces

It can be difficult enough for people without braces to maintain a fresh mouth and adding braces into the mix makes things even more troublesome. After all, brackets and rubber bands make it much easier for food and drink ingredients to get stuck in tight spaces around the teeth and all throughout the mouth. This facet provides a breeding ground for bacteria which can result in foul odors.

How To Prevent Bad Breath

  • Pay close attention to your diet. Foods high in sugar and carbohydrates tend to produce worse breath than foods high in protein, vegetables, fruits and dairy.

  • Drink lots of water. A dry mouth and a dehydrated body stunt the production of saliva which works to remove bacteria as well as leftover food particles.

  • Avoid consuming alcohol and smoking.

  • Practice good oral hygiene. This includes brushing your teeth at least twice a day and flossing daily.

  • Use a tongue scraper to remove bacteria from the tongue’s surface.

  • Rinse with mouthwash after each brush and after each meal.

  • Remember to get your teeth cleaned regularly. We recommend scheduling an appointment every six months.

Best ortho of all times. Seriously! I went to 3 others who told me all sorts of weird stuff and he had no problem moving my wisdom teeth over to missing teeth spots which saved me like 3 implants in the long term. Super sweet office and knowledgeable doc! I am going to miss them!
Response from the owner:Thank you for your wonderful feedback! We're thrilled to hear that our approach helped you avoid implants and that you enjoyed our office atmosphere. Weโ€™ll miss you too and wish you all the best!

I visited Speaks Orthodontics to straighten my teeth before my upcoming wedding. I was originally quoted 18 months for treatment, I finished in just 12. The practice is clean, the techs are professional and kind, and Dr. Speaks is very talented. I appreciate that he is direct but remains supportive and encouraging. Highly recommend this practice!

How Braces Can Contribute to Bad Breath

Braces can make it easier for food particles to get stuck in hard-to-reach places in the mouth, leading to an increase in bacteria growth. The brackets and wires create crevices where food can accumulate, causing a buildup of plaque and bacteria that can result in bad breath.

In addition, braces can make it more challenging to properly clean the teeth and gums, as the brackets and wires can obstruct thorough brushing and flossing. This can further contribute to the development of bad breath if food particles and bacteria are not effectively removed from the mouth.

Tips for Maintaining Fresh Breath with Braces

One way to combat bad breath while wearing braces is to maintain a strict oral hygiene routine. This includes brushing your teeth after every meal and flossing daily to remove any food particles that may be trapped in your braces. Using an antimicrobial mouthwash can also help kill bacteria and freshen your breath.

It is also important to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day. Water helps wash away food particles and bacteria in the mouth, reducing the risk of bad breath. Avoiding foods high in sugar and carbohydrates can also help prevent the development of bad breath while wearing braces.
