Tooth decay is the most common health condition among teens. Fortunately, there are things that you can do to help your teen keep their smile healthy.
You should encourage your teen to do the following:
Encourage Brushing and Flossing
Brushing and flossing will remove plaque. When plaque mixes with the bacteria from your mouth, it can create an acid that causes tooth decay. Your teen should brush their twice a day for two minutes at a time.
It is best for teens to use a soft-bristled brush. The toothbrush should be replaced after three months. It should also be replaced after sickness.
Flossing not only removes plaque, but it also removes food particles. Your teen should floss at least once a day. It is best to use unwaxed floss because it is thinner and easier to slide in between the teeth.
Limit Sugary Drinks and Foods
Sugar can easily lead to tooth decay. That is why it is important for teens to limit their intake of sugary foods and beverages. It is better to consume sugary foods and beverages with meals instead of by themselves. Saliva is produced when one eats a meal, which helps wash away food particles and plaque.
You should also encourage your teen to eat healthy snacks. This includes raw veggies, cheese, and yogurt.
