When it comes to a fun afternoon, we realize that spending your time at a dentist appointment is low on your list of to-do’s. Luckily, there are a few ways to make your visits easier – and it starts with learning the right ways to brush.
If you want to maintain a beautiful smile, even after orthodontic treatment, don’t ruin your teeth with poor dental hygiene habits.Check out these tips to make sure you’re keeping your teeth in great condition:
Wait 30 minutes. Brushing immediately after eating can damage your teeth. The pH-levels in your mouth are lower than normal during this time, so brushing can be very abrasive.
Brush your teeth for 2min/2x. You should be brushing your teeth for two minutes, twice a day. A good way to make sure you’re following this rule is to play music while you brush. Each song can act as a timer on your routine – besides, it’ll also make brushing your teeth more fun!
Don’t always start in the same place. Some people start brushing their teeth in the same place each time. But, by the time you reach the last area of your mouth, you may become bored or tired and end up paying less attention. The American Dental Association recommends starting in different places each time so all of your teeth receive the same amount of attention.
Replace your toothbrush frequently. Every three to four months to be exact. Your toothbrush can easily gather bacteria on the brush and handle.
Make sure you’re using the right kind of brush. Often, people use toothbrushes that are too big or small for their mouth, which can restrict them from reaching all the right areas. Also, the ADA recommends buying a soft bristled brush to make sure you don’t damage your gums.
