How To Clean Retainers Without Harsh Chemicals

The last thing you want to hear is that you need more metal in your mouth after your braces are removed. But, retainers are a necessity in preserving the smile you worked so hard for. And, when you keep your retainers clean, you keep your smile clean as well. Here are some ways to disinfect your retainer so it’s ready to be worn every day.

Always keep them moist. Never let your retainers dry out. Your retainers should either be in your mouth or in a container of distilled water.

Brush them. You can’t soak your retainers in distilled water and expect them to get clean on their own. You’ll need to brush them every few days or as needed to prevent tartar buildup.

Bring them to your dentist. While this step may not be required for everyone, if your retainers end up with a large amount of buildup, your dentist has a tool that can disinfect them safely without any chemicals or damage.

Baking soda is your friend. Baking soda increases the pH in your mouth, which can keep the bacteria at bay. Baking soda is also a natural, safe, and effective way to combat any odors.

You should always avoid:
•Dishwashers.
•Boiling water.
•Mouthwash.
•Retainer cleansers and tablets.

Dr. Speaks and his team were amazing during the duration of my treatment. He worked with my surgeon during the process for my double jaw surgery and together they created a plan that saved all my teeth! I’m so happy with my smile. 10/10 would recommend.

We’ve been with Speaks Orthodontics for three years and every visit was a breeze. The service is impeccable and every issue and question is always addressed promptly. My kids felt welcomed in the clinic and were always greeted with smiles and of course looked forward to playing Mr Pac-Man. Highly recommend.

Best ortho of all times. Seriously! I went to 3 others who told me all sorts of weird stuff and he had no problem moving my wisdom teeth over to missing teeth spots which saved me like 3 implants in the long term. Super sweet office and knowledgeable doc! I am going to miss them!
Response from the owner:Thank you for your wonderful feedback! We're thrilled to hear that our approach helped you avoid implants and that you enjoyed our office atmosphere. We’ll miss you too and wish you all the best!

Benefits of Using Natural Cleaning Methods

Using natural cleaning methods to clean retainers not only helps to keep your smile clean, but it also avoids the use of harsh chemicals that can potentially damage your retainers. Baking soda, for example, is a safe and effective way to combat bacteria and odors without any negative side effects. By incorporating natural cleaning methods into your retainer care routine, you can ensure that your retainers stay clean and in good condition for longer.

Additionally, natural cleaning methods are often more cost-effective and readily available compared to store-bought cleaning solutions. You can easily find baking soda and other natural cleaning ingredients in your kitchen, making it convenient to clean your retainers regularly without having to purchase specialized cleaning products. By choosing natural cleaning methods, you can maintain your oral health and the longevity of your retainers in a sustainable and eco-friendly way.

Tips for Proper Retainer Care

In addition to using natural cleaning methods, there are other tips for proper retainer care that can help you maintain a healthy smile. It's important to clean your retainers daily to prevent bacteria buildup and odors. You can also soak your retainers in a mixture of water and baking soda or vinegar to disinfect them thoroughly.

Furthermore, make sure to store your retainers in a clean case when not in use to prevent them from getting lost or damaged. Avoid exposing your retainers to extreme temperatures or harsh chemicals, as these can affect their shape and durability. By following these tips for proper retainer care, you can ensure that your retainers remain clean, comfortable, and effective in preserving your smile.
