Being Hygienic at Home

Now, more than ever, it’s important to protect yourself against germs and bacteria and practice proper hygiene. Since your oral health can affect your overall health, it’s essential to take care of your teeth and gums to avoid other major problems. Here’s how you can stay hygienic at home and keep yourself healthy.

Watch Your Snacking

While you’re home in isolation, it can be easy to snack every minute of the day. However, even if you’re choosing seemingly healthy foods, you may still be putting yourself at risk for cavities and tooth decay.

Essentially, every food contains some form of sugar — so if you’re consuming more snacks throughout the day (and neglect brushing your teeth afterward), you’re allowing that sugar to remain on your teeth and gums. To avoid this, try to limit your snacking or brush your teeth after you have your treats.

Handle Your Orthodontic Equipment with Care

Whenever you handle your Invisalign trays, retainers, or other orthodontic equipment, it’s essential to wash your hands thoroughly beforehand. If you don’t, any germs or bacteria that are on your hands can be transferred onto trays and into your mouth.

Additionally, you should be sure you’re cleaning your equipment regularly, as well, to rid it of any bacteria. In fact, you can use toothpaste and warm water to get rid of everyday germs; and if your equipment is a bit dirtier or has some stuck-on grime, you can soak them in denture cleaner.

All 3 of my kids have or are being treated here. Great experience with each one. The front desk is diligent about keeping all appointments on time. Courteous when needing to adjust appointments. Dr Speaks and all the staff in the back are professional yet approachable. Dr Speaks is honest about his opinion and approach. I appreciate knowing I am getting services only what is needed and not getting “sold” extras. I would recommend 10/10
Response from the owner:Thank you so much for taking the time to share your five-star experience with us. We truly appreciate your kind words and support. Providing a welcoming and positive environment is always our highest priority.

My daughter had a very noticeable crossbite and was constantly biting her cheeks while chewing. Our previous orthodontist attempted to get her approved for braces through insurance, but after the initial denial, they told us it wasn’t worth appealing. Thankfully, our new dentist referred us to Dr. Speaks. From the very first visit, Dr. Speaks immediately recognized the issue and took the time to thoroughly explain the problem, the treatment process, and what we could expect. His team submitted the insurance claim, and when it was denied, they didn’t stop there. They fought for us by filing a strong appeal and resubmitting all the necessary documentation. Thanks to their persistence and attention to detail, my daughter was approved and is now on her way to a beautiful new smile. We are incredibly grateful to Dr. Speaks and his entire team, especially Dahlia for their dedication and hard work. Beyond getting the insurance approval, they treat every patient with genuine kindness, patience, and respect. We’re so happy our paths crossed with this wonderful practice! Highly recommend.
Response from the owner:We are thrilled to hear that you found our staff to be kind and accommodating. Our team works diligently to ensure everyone has a comfortable experience from start to finish. Thank you for the review.

Best ortho of all times. Seriously! I went to 3 others who told me all sorts of weird stuff and he had no problem moving my wisdom teeth over to missing teeth spots which saved me like 3 implants in the long term. Super sweet office and knowledgeable doc! I am going to miss them!
Response from the owner:Thank you for your wonderful feedback! We're thrilled to hear that our approach helped you avoid implants and that you enjoyed our office atmosphere. Weโ€™ll miss you too and wish you all the best!

I visited Speaks Orthodontics to straighten my teeth before my upcoming wedding. I was originally quoted 18 months for treatment, I finished in just 12. The practice is clean, the techs are professional and kind, and Dr. Speaks is very talented. I appreciate that he is direct but remains supportive and encouraging. Highly recommend this practice!
Response from the owner:Thank you, Lauren! We're thrilled to hear about your positive experience and the results achieved ahead of your wedding. Our team strives to provide excellent care, and your recommendation means so much to us!

Dr. Speaks and team have been so wonderful throughout the process of my Spark Aligners! They are incredibly consistent and compassionate. The staff has always been so welcoming and kind - always taking the time to answer any questions I have and making each appointment feeling personable and not rushed. I'm so grateful for the team and smile with confidence these days.

I went in for a free consultation for jaw pain. Dr. Speaks was incredibly thorough and spent time patiently explaining what he was seeing and teaching me how to treat it. Turns out I do not need orthodontia! The front desk staff were very nice and Dalia, who is the treatment coordinator, was also very kind. 10/10 from me! Oh, and my grandson is being treated by Dr. Speaks and he and his parents are very happy so far.
Response from the owner:Thank you for your wonderful feedback, Leila! Weโ€™re thrilled to hear about your positive experience with Dr. Speaks and our team. It's great to know your grandson is also receiving excellent care. We appreciate your trust in us!

Importance of Oral Hygiene for Overall Health

Maintaining excellent oral hygiene is far more than just keeping your teeth looking bright and clean; it's a crucial component of your overall health and well-being. The mouth serves as a gateway to the rest of your body, and the bacteria and inflammation present in oral conditions can have systemic effects, potentially contributing to serious health issues. Therefore, prioritizing your oral health is a proactive step towards safeguarding your general health.

Research has established strong links between poor oral hygiene and conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and respiratory infections. Inflammatory processes in the gums, like gingivitis and periodontitis, can allow bacteria to enter the bloodstream, impacting other organs and systems. By diligently practicing good oral hygiene, you not only prevent dental problems but also significantly reduce your risk of experiencing these broader health complications.

Daily Oral Hygiene Practices for a Healthy Smile

Establishing a consistent and effective daily oral hygiene routine is fundamental to preventing common dental issues and maintaining a healthy mouth. This routine should encompass more than just brushing; it involves a multi-faceted approach to ensure all areas of your mouth are thoroughly cleaned and protected. Committing to these practices daily is the most effective way to combat plaque, prevent cavities, and keep your gums healthy.

Key daily practices include brushing your teeth at least twice a day for two minutes each time with fluoride toothpaste, using a soft-bristled brush. Don't forget to brush your tongue to remove bacteria that can cause bad breath. Additionally, flossing daily is essential to remove food particles and plaque from between teeth and under the gum line, areas that a toothbrush cannot reach. Rinsing with an antiseptic mouthwash can also provide an extra layer of protection against bacteria and freshen your breath.

Preventing Cavities and Tooth Decay Through Diet

Your dietary choices play a pivotal role in preventing cavities and tooth decay. The types of food and drinks you consume, as well as their frequency, directly impact the health of your tooth enamel. By making informed decisions about your diet, you can significantly reduce the risk of developing these common dental problems and promote stronger, healthier teeth.

Sugary and acidic foods and beverages are the primary culprits behind tooth decay. When sugars are consumed, bacteria in your mouth feed on them and produce acids that erode tooth enamel. Frequent snacking, even on seemingly healthy foods that contain natural sugars, can expose your teeth to these acids for extended periods. Limiting your intake of sweets, sodas, and fruit juices, and opting for water, dairy products, and crunchy vegetables instead, can greatly contribute to cavity prevention.

Maintaining Orthodontic Appliances for Optimal Results

Proper care and maintenance of orthodontic appliances, such as braces, aligners, and retainers, are critical for achieving the desired treatment outcomes and ensuring oral health throughout the process. These devices require specific attention to prevent damage, maintain hygiene, and facilitate the efficient movement of teeth. Neglecting their care can lead to treatment delays, complications, and increased risk of dental issues.

For clear aligners like Invisalign, it's essential to wash your hands before handling them to avoid transferring germs into your mouth. Regular cleaning of the aligners themselves, often with a specialized cleaning solution or a mild soap and water, is also vital to prevent bacterial buildup and odor. For braces, patients need to be diligent with brushing and flossing around the brackets and wires to remove food debris and plaque, which can otherwise lead to gum inflammation and cavities. Retainers, whether worn after treatment or as part of it, also require daily cleaning to remain hygienic and effective.
