In a perfect world, the results you get from wearing braces once will last for the rest of your life. However, for many teens and adults, experiencing orthodontic relapse is a disappointing reality. If you notice any of the following signs, it may be worth discussing a second set of braces with your orthodontist.
New Crowding or Gaps
The most visibly apparent sign that you may need braces is a shift in the positioning in your teeth resulting in crowding or gaps. Without the recommended regular nightly use of retainers, it’s common to see teeth beginning to shift back to their original position pre-orthodontics.
Jaw Pain or Discomfort
The jaw is a joint that is responsible for most oral functions including biting, chewing, and even breathing. When this joint’s functions are stinted by misaligned teeth or shifted bite, everyday activities like eating can become uncomfortable or even painful.
Gum Disease & Tooth Decay
Shifting teeth are more than a cosmetic issue, they can also cause some oral health complications. When teeth shift out of alignment, they create more areas where bacteria and plaque can develop that are difficult to reach during regular brushing and flossing. Orthodontic relapse can put you at a higher risk for gum disease and tooth decay. This can be detected by visibly inflamed gums or your gums bleed easily.
