How Long Will My Braces Hurt?

Many people have a list of concerns when it comes to braces. One main question on the top of the list is: How much pain will I be in?

What if we told you the path to a straighter smile doesn’t hurt as much as you think it does? Besides, any amount of pain you may feel during your orthodontic treatment will be worth it in the end.

How long does the process take?

For most orthodontic options, the process will take around one to two hours.

How long will my teeth hurt?

The process itself won’t hurt your teeth at all, but your mouth will be sore afterward. We typically see our patients having some discomfort for at least one week after treatment.

How long will it take to get used to braces?

Most patients are used to their braces in about one month. After six months, many patients are so used to their braces, they are performing their oral care routine in their sleep!

What are some tips to help deal with the pain?

  1. For the first few days, stick to soft food. For example, soup, mashed potatoes, yogurt, milkshakes, etc.

  2. If needed, use pain relievers like Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen.

  3. Use orthodontic wax to avoid mouth sores. Apply the wax on the brackets of your braces.

  4. Rinse your mouth with warm salt water several times a day.

Dr. Speaks and his team were amazing during the duration of my treatment. He worked with my surgeon during the process for my double jaw surgery and together they created a plan that saved all my teeth! I’m so happy with my smile. 10/10 would recommend.

We’ve been with Speaks Orthodontics for three years and every visit was a breeze. The service is impeccable and every issue and question is always addressed promptly. My kids felt welcomed in the clinic and were always greeted with smiles and of course looked forward to playing Mr Pac-Man. Highly recommend.

Best ortho of all times. Seriously! I went to 3 others who told me all sorts of weird stuff and he had no problem moving my wisdom teeth over to missing teeth spots which saved me like 3 implants in the long term. Super sweet office and knowledgeable doc! I am going to miss them!
Response from the owner:Thank you for your wonderful feedback! We're thrilled to hear that our approach helped you avoid implants and that you enjoyed our office atmosphere. We’ll miss you too and wish you all the best!

How to Manage Discomfort During Orthodontic Treatment

Dealing with discomfort during orthodontic treatment is a common concern for many patients. While it is normal to experience some soreness after getting braces, there are several ways to manage the discomfort. One tip is to stick to soft foods for the first few days, as this can help alleviate any pain or discomfort. Additionally, using pain relievers like Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen can also help reduce any soreness.

Another helpful tip is to maintain good oral hygiene practices, such as brushing and flossing regularly. Keeping your teeth and braces clean can prevent any additional discomfort or issues. Lastly, don't hesitate to communicate with your orthodontist if you are experiencing significant pain or discomfort. They can provide guidance and support to help you feel more comfortable during your treatment.
